We discovered what a good actor Ashley Walters was in Bullet Boy. He proves himself again in this dark romance set against the backdrop of London's urban music scene. It isn't as striking a film as Bullet Boy, having a weaker plot and a less sharp sense of black British life.

Walters, as Danny, the leader of a rap crew, holds the central theme together as he falls in love with Carla (Louise Rose), a middle-class girl connected to a rival group.

It is essentially about the difficulty, in our so-called multicultural society, of progressing from one social and cultural milieu into another without being accused of disloyalty and bad faith.

Walters' is not the only good performance. Chris Steward, as his oldest friend, Fable, trying desperately to make contact with the white mother who has deserted him, is equally convincing. And the cast produce very few false notes.

The weakness of Life and Lyrics is that it tries to be several things at once - a music film, a study of black youth and a thriller, as well as a tale of love and loyalty.

Richard Laxton, the debut director, and writer Ken Williams paint the rap scene confidently enough. But they end up making a film that works best when illustrating the minor details of the principal characters' lives. Elsewhere, too much simplistic melodrama gets in the way.
