Easily the most stylish Italian film of the year, In Memory of Me has Andrea (Christo Jivkov), a young man fed up with his life, trying to find something to live by in the comforting certainties of religion.

He is sent as a novice to a monastery in Venice where he starts a solitary existence of prayer, study and silent meditation. There, he gets to know another novice, who is sufficiently tormented to renounce his vows, and a third who is critical of the teaching priests and also decides to leave. Will Andrea do the same?

Directed by Saverio Costanzo, it's all superbly shot in the white-walled no-man's-land of the monastery, situated on a small island in the Venetian lagoon, but unwisely selects often inappropriate classical music to accompany its undoubted visual panache.

Based on Impure Tears, a novel by Furio Monicelli which focused on homosexual desire, it offers nothing much in place of the book's gay theme which would allow us to understand Andrea's dilemma. Instead, its focus is the difficulties of faith and the choices that face the young without it. Jivkov's impressive performance, however, is watchable throughout.
