Remember Me lacks any real flame

Twilight’s Robert Pattinson and Lost’s Emilie de Ravin star in Allen Coulter’s downbeat romance.

But before you faint with pseudo-sexual anticipation, be warned that they are a neurotic rather than an erotic pair. Tyler (Pattinson) still worries about a brother who committed suicide and a father (Pierce Brosnan) who is incapable of showing affection. Ally (de Ravin) is the daughter of a police detective (Chris Cooper) who, when young, watched as her mother was killed by thugs on the New York underground.

When the detective arrests Tyler for causing affray, a friend persuades Tyler to court Ally to get some favours from her dad. Naturally, when he actually falls for her, she finds this out. You can tell this a mile off — but not the conclusion which brings 9/11 into the proceedings.

Pattinson looks beautiful but can’t manage much else — but that’s not why the film lingers. It’s because it has ideas about grief and guilt that are well above its station. Decently shot and directed as it is, it lacks any real flame. (Opens tomorrow)
