Searching for the one

This small, independent, LA-based film from writer-director Alex Holdridge stars Scoot McNairy as a twentysomething inadequate whose girl has left him and who can’t be bothered to try to find another one. But it’s New Year’s Eve, so he is persuaded to place an ad on the internet and finds Vivian (Sara Simmonds), a seemingly more confident blonde with some of the same problems.

In the waning hours of the year, and amid much chaos, they find a kind of equilibrium together. Good playing, pawky humour and a shrewd feeling for what it’s like to be alone mark this black-and-white film out.
