Sleuth you'll probably want to slap

Nancy Drew, the young amateur detective who has entertained young readers for some 75 years in book and strip cartoon form, is played by Emma Roberts in this hopelessly botched film adaptation.
It has little of the charm and fun of the original and presents Nancy as a know-all whose smartarse sleuthing renders sympathetic even the wooden villains presented to us along the way.
Having promised her father (Tate Donovan) to give it all up and get on with her schoolwork at Hollywood High School, she finds herself drawn into solving the mystery surrounding the death of a famous actress whose home is now the site of strange happenings.
She does so, of course. But, frankly, Andrew Fleming's film makes her out to be such a selfsatisfied little strumpet that I fear even the teens at whom the movie is directed will want to slap her face.
