In this extraordinary Greek film, a stern father, aided by his wife, traps his three children in the family home to protect them from the outside world. He has taught them a new language and made them accept an alternative universe. Planes, he explains, are toys pinned to the sky, cats are predatory and dangerous to humans, and if they leave the confines of the house and garden, the children will come to an unholy fate.
There are certain joys from outside, including a female security officer from the factory in which the father works who is brought in to give his teenage son sexual relief. She also seems prepared to do the same for his two sisters.

Giorgos Lanthimos’s film has no orthodox narrative to speak of; instead, short sequences illustrate the children’s strange lifestyle and then their gradual revolt. It is funny as well as scary, and its sex scenes, though unerotic, leave little to the imagination. Nobody enjoys them very much but it is something to do.

It is the woman from outside who causes the collapse of the system, almost without knowing. But we are never sure how the siblings will manage to escape their crippling existence entirely. This is a film of great originality, a cumulative power and a basic oddness that you’ll either consider amazing or excruciatingly dull.
