Character in The Broken Hearts Club mention, among other movies, Steel Magnolias.

Like that virtually all-women film, this one is also about gossipy relationships, but between uncloseted gay men. They, too, have their tribulations just like Julia Roberts and the beauty-parlour set, though this bunch are all in a softball team and frequent a West Hollywood bar, which explains the strong feeling that these may be gay

cousins of the chatterbox folk in Friends. Gigolo, geek, druggie, queen, boy next door: all of them in search of love - love, not sex.

In this respect, it's a low-maintenance show: just a wink at drag, chaste embraces, no one dying of Aids and being serenaded by his friends with the jollity of a Judy Garland opening night and no doomsayer quoting bitchy obituary from The Boys in the Band about showing me a happy homosexual and I'll show you a gay corpse. (The only fatality here is due to drugs.) At its best, it is funny and feelgood; at its mildest, a PR primer for newly "out" men.
