"The absence of gravity interferes with my digestion," says a cowled John Malkovich without burping in this sci-fi horror from Simon Hunter. How he and fellow cast members Ron Perlman, Thomas Jane, Sean Pertwee and Anna Walton mouth the lines they are given in utter seriousness is a puzzle. But they do, and we laugh even if they keep straight faces.

It is the 23rd century and an exhausted planet is commanded by four large corporations which have presumably survived the current credit crunch without government support. They are fighting each other in trenches reminiscent of the First World War. The devastation caused by the battles lets loose an army of mutants from beneath the earth’s surface and a hardy group of soldiers, led by Perlman, are dispatched to deal with them.

There is some excitement to be had. However, it looks like a computer game unwisely made into a movie without the money to do it justice.
