The gore's a bore in Roth's splatter-fest

After the success of Hostel, Eli Roth was bound to be persuaded to make a sequel. It's just as bloody but less stuffed with soft porn. Which is strange since it's about three young American women rather than the men of the first film.

The trio (Lauren German, Heather Matarazzo and Bijou Phillips) are persuaded by a beautiful lesbian to journey to a spa in Slovakia where they become pawns in the sick fantasies of rich goons out to kill them for thrills in the most painful way possible.

Has the splat pack gone too far?

A brutal introduction to the splat horror genre

Roth is a capable indecent film-maker - but why he spends at least half the film on feeble character-drawing and long-winded exposition before launching into the familiar bloodbath I'll never know. It is pretty boring. But then the gore is even worse to watch.

A former Slovak Minister of Culture plays one of the sadists - which is possibly why he's no longer in Government. The girls will not win Academy awards. Roth, however, encouraged by producer Quentin Tarantino, is bound to be awarded a third go at the franchise. Take your sickbags.
