Robert Bresson is one of the great directors of all time but he has a lot to answer for.

The Dardenne brothers try to capture the mystery and dark grace of Mouchette or Au Hasard Balthazar — but what they churn out are feel-bad movies that put cute women through the wringer.

The Silence of Lorna represents business as usual for the Belgian duo.

Bad-tempered Albanian Lorna (Arta Dobroshi) works in a dry cleaners in grey-as-gristle Liege. She’s married a junkie (Jérémie Renier) as part of a plot to make money but is thrown into confusion when he decides to go clean.

Her friends, even her apparently decent Italian boyfriend (Alban Ukaj), want to bump him off but she decides his life is worth saving. And promptly removes all her clothes.

The performances are excellent — low-key and nuanced — but the set-up is so contrived that you never feel involved for long. The world has gone to hell in a handcart — agreed. But stagey morality plays are not a way out.

The Silence Of Lorna (Le Silence De Lorna)
