In Eric Barbier's French noir thriller, a man searching for revenge locks his victims in a refrigerator, leaving them to suffocate or freeze. The film, though, isn't much like recent examples of torture porn. It's too stylish for that.

The serpent in question is Plender (Clovis Cornillac), an old schoolfriend of Vincent (Yvan Attal) who's a photographer in the middle of a messy divorce and accused of rape by a fashion model.

Plender seems at first to be his saviour, taking his car to be mended and even disposing of the body that his friend finds in his boot. But it is soon clear that Plender is up to no good. He wants vengeance for a childhood destroyed by a prank that went wrong.

It's vividly acted and shot, by Jerome Rober, in a rain-soaked Paris. It suggests a moral mire that includes almost everyone in the film, but it doesn't so much explore it as provide a series of shocks that will keep you watching.

The Serpent (Le Serpent)
