Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls - review

Not a Hammer Horror-style sex romp but a documentary about Lynda and Jools Topp, Kiwi twin sisters who since the Eighties have been singing and telling jokes about their love of other women (and loathing for racism and nuclear war).

The comedy is nice but not startling (reminiscent of Victoria Wood/French and Saunders/Dame Edna Everage). It's a different story with the folk-country songs. As early footage shows, the sisters had an instant connection as performers. Even as teens, they wove around each other like snake charmers and their energy levels - and, amazingly, voices - are still intact. A rousing Maori ballad proves especially jolting.

Film-maker Leanne Pooley could have been more probing in her interviews with the twins and their supporters. But the fact of the duo's success is so astounding you're gripped all the same. They're not Bright New Stars, they're not Sad Old Ones. They seem simply to have found a place in the mainstream without selling their souls. Their bravery and talent are an inspiration and the whole thing makes you want to move to New Zealand (though not before catching their act at the Union Chapel tonight)
