"Frank," said Jimmy Stewart to Frank Capra before they made this classic hometown tale, "if you want to make a movie about me committing suicide, with an angel with no wings called Clarence, I'm your boy!"

How right he was - the pair's first movie after returning home from the war has become more popular than anything else Capra did.

Whatever you think of the essentially homespun sentiment, this is a sincere and ultimately affecting movie that can be seen again and again, especially around this time of year when similar anxieties hit us before the big celebration.

It's A Wonderful Life
