Andrew Haigh's study of a temporary relationship is more sophisticated than most gay cinema. It is eloquently directed, acted with conviction and, above all, written with a shrewd feeling for the truth.

Russell (Tom Cullen) and Glen (Chris New) spend 48 hours together in London, one insisting that he doesn't want a lasting relationship, the other secretly longing for one. Both men are damaged and take regular refuge in drink, drugs and sex. Each is intelligent enough to know what they are doing but unable to get to grips with anything like love.

Haigh treats his subject matter with matter-of-fact realism. If this is a new voice on the British film scene, it's a refreshingly adult one.
