Bodyguard, with Hazel Keech and Salman Khan, has been seen by millions after becoming one of Bollywood's highest grossing films in its opening week.
But 24-year-old Keech, from Ilford, had been set to abandon her dreams of making it big before she was contacted by the film's producers.
A chance meeting with Khan on the set of his one of his films in London in 2008 led to his taking her number and passing it on.
Keech, a former pupil at Beal High School in Redbridge, met the producers and was cast as Maya, the best friend of a woman Khan's character Lovely Singh is hired to protect.
The film has had mixed reviews, but The New York Times described the Londoner as "beguiling".
Reviewer Andy Webster wrote: "In Keech's supporting presence, understated yet palpable, we sense a performer of emerging, and remarkable, star power."
Keech, half English, half Indian, has been living for the past five years in India and has featured in music videos and adverts there.
In London she sang in the West End version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and has been a Harry Potter film extra. She now hopes to get film work in Britain or the US.
