If you like operatic Westerns, Sergio Leone’s 1969 masterwork, in which he pulls together most of the themes of his three Dollar films, and also contributes one of the most famous credit sequences in history, will wet your lips all over again.

More noticeable this time round is Ennio Morricone’s brilliant score.

It was based not on what was shot but on the script and necessitated Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Claudia Cardinale and co adapting their body rhythms to the music.

Surprisingly, Bernardo Bertolucci was among those who manufactured the story.
