What a horror
21 June 2007
Something must be seriously wrong when Roland Joffé, the director of The Killing Fields and The Mission, is reduced to making slasher horrors.
In Captivity, made in Russia with American money, Elisha Cuthbert plays an actress trapped by a psychopath in a dungeon-like Manhattan basement and made to drink the crushed-up gore of a previous victim. She is aided in this by a fellow captive (Daniel Gillies). I won't go any further. Except to say that she doesn't seem to have any stomach trouble, and calmly has sex with her helper.
Larry Cohen, an experienced horror hand, wrote this, and Joffé does his best to keep the tension boiling up to a ridiculous climax. Even so, everybody involved should be ashamed of this nasty farrago.
