Now she is to be immortalised as an artistic icon with an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum of outfits, photographs and accessories that have defined her career.
Among the 200 objects to be featured in Kylie: The Exhibition are the goldcoloured hotpants she famously sported in the video to accompany her 2000 single Spinning Around, her first number one for 10 years.
Dresses and hats from her nine tours will also be on display at the South Kensington museum while the Australian singer herself has donated many of the 45 costumes and 60 photographs originally displayed in her native Melbourne.
They include the overalls she wore as mechanic Charlene Robinson in Neighbours, the Australian TV soap in which she first made her name.
V&A director Mark Jones said: "The exhibition looks at the way the image of such a successful performer has changed over the years."
He said he hopes Minogue, 38, who will relaunch her Showgirl tour next month after being treated for breast cancer, will attend the opening.
The exhibition includes the star's collaborations with designers including Dolce & Gabbana, Julien Macdonald, Helmut Lang and Manolo Blahnik.
Minogue said: "I hope visitors have a great time exploring the exhibition, finding the familiar and discovering the new."
The exhibition is part of a growing trend in the capital for shows devoted to pop stars. Later this month the National Portrait Gallery will open an exhibition of photographs and album covers of the Pet Shop Boys, who have collaborated with Sam Taylor-Wood, Wolfgang Tillmans and Bruce Weber during their 20-year career.
Proud Galleries' Camden gallery has a Freddie Mercury exhibition and forthcoming shows include photographs of Paul McCartney's latest tour and Jamiroquai.
Gallery owner Alex Proud, 37, said: "Rock 'n' roll is the opera of my parents' generation. "In this PR-driven world, it's fun to try to mount exhibitions that tell a story and let you see the pop star in a natural light."
Kylie: The Exhibition is at the Victoria and Albert Museum, 8 February to 10 June. Pet Shop Boys Portraits is at the National Portrait Gallery, 30 October to 28 February.
