More tickets to see Hockney blockbuster

The Royal Academy is to release more advance tickets for its blockbuster exhibition of David Hockney landscapes after the first batch sold out within weeks.

The Piccadilly institution is cutting the number of tickets available on the day so that more visitors can plan their trip ahead and avoid queues.

A spokeswoman said: "Demand for tickets for the exhibition has been extremely high since its opening two weeks ago." The Academy is understood to be considering what other measures can be taken to cope with the huge public interest in David Hockney RA: A Bigger Picture. It is already open until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Day tickets can be purchased online and from the box office each day from 10am. The clamour has prompted a boom in membership of its Friends of the RA scheme as members are guaranteed free access to all shows. The exhibition of more than 150 works is dominated by a series of recent brightly-coloured paintings of Hockney's native Yorkshire, shown alongside related drawings and video.

Most have been made since Hockney moved back to Bridlington in East Riding after many years based in California.

The show received rave reviews from many critics.

In the Daily Mail, AN Wilson said: "As you look around the exhibition, you will notice something apart from the great works of art ... You will see the wonder in the faces of the people looking at them." However, it was slated by the Standard's Brian Sewell.

The show runs until April 9.
