50 Cent’s best days are behind him

With a name such as Before I Self-Destruct, it’s easy to imagine that 50 Cent’s latest UK tour may also be his last.
Whether or not the New Yorker decides to call a rap on his career, his star is certainly fading.
The 34-year-old’s latest album peaked at number 22 and there were a significant number of empty seats at Wembley Arena for his Saturday night show.
Tellingly, those who did show up were mostly in their twenties — the demographic that grew up listening to the rapper’s platinum-selling breakthrough, 2003’s Get Rich Or
Die Tryin’.
They were on their feet from the opening synth riff of The Invitation, in which Fiddy appeared backed by three rappers and a DJ. The muscular posse was suitably menacing on the shimmering Psycho but it was a relief when a full band was unveiled for the slick R’n’B of Baby By Me.
Frustratingly, this did little to improve the sound. Booming and muddy throughout, it threatened to drown-out Fiddy’s laidback vocal style.
After making phallic gestures with his microphone, the rapper launched into the X-rated London Girl, before In Da Club exploded into the night amid pyrotechnics and mass hysteria.
It was proof that 50 Cent can still excite us — but also proof that his best days are behind him.
