A flood of harmony

They were called the "folk Beatles" when they provided a stream of fine songs to fuel the traditional music revival in the Sixties.

Now in 2007 that original family of singers - sisters Lal and Norma, brother Mike and cousin John Harrison - have grown into the most extraordinary folk dynasty and created, as this evening was entitled, A Mighty River of Song.

It was an evening brimful of emotion and stuffed with great music - every song a gem. Folk guitar hero Martin Carthy, Norma's husband, and their daughter Eliza (awarded the prestigious gold star from the English Folk Dance and Song Society and on fine fiddle form) produced a stunning rendition of the ghost story ballad The Bows of London; in comparison, Maria, the late Lal's daughter, cast an almost equally ghostly shadow of her mother's voice when she sang the beautiful Fine Horseman with her brother, Oliver Knight, accompanying on guitar.

And in between Norma and Mike sewed the evening together with friendly banter. But it was the goosebump inducing sound of a chorus of 10 or more genetically related voices singing in full-flooded harmony that was so overpowering. The encore Sound, Sound Your Instruments of Joy said it all. They did, and it was unforgettable.
