A temptation worth succumbing to

This tightly focused exhibition concentrates on just one great painting: Lucas Cranach's 1526 panel Adam And Eve (pictured, detail). Owned by the Courtauld, it is Cranach's finest painting in Britain. It displays the German artist's mastery of three genres: the nude, the landscape and animal painting.
Having already taken a bite, a sinuous Eve pushes an apple into Adam's palm. With her sly, almond-shaped eyes, one sees the flame-haired Eve already transformed by her devious act, while Adam merely looks on in a state of momentary doubt and confusion. A menagerie of wild beasts frolic at their feet - comically, the prongs of a stag's antlers cup Adam's camouflaged genitals.
It is a painting that not only glories in the abundance of nature but conveys the story with great emotional range. There is also the exquisite detail, the finely wrought textures and the dazzling colours: so many disparate elements in an extraordinarily elegant composition.
The painting is given context with three major loans: Apollo And Diana, Cupid Complaining To Venus, and A Faun And His Family. Cranach's handling of these mythological subjects shows remarkable similarities to the biblical work, suggesting the paintings were all commissioned by the same patron for the same decorative scheme. It is a stunning exhibition, all the better for its compactness. Fisun Güner
