Abbey Rd to host new 'Whistle Test'

The legendary Abbey Road studios are to stage a TV music show billed as "the new Old Grey Whistle Test".

Stars who have already signed up include The Killers, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Paul Simon, Primal Scream, The Feeling and Muse.

Each 60-minute show will feature performances from three artists but there will be no host or studio audience.

The musicians will also speak about their work, interspersed with footage of rehearsals.

Other acts in the first series will include David Gilmour, Corinne Bailey Rae, Randy Crawford, Madeleine Peyroux, The Kooks, Snow Patrol, Razorlight and Kasabian.

Director Annabel Jankel, co-creator of Max Headroom, said: "We have aimed to make each show have the look, feel and atmosphere of a music movie made for TV.

"We shoot with 35mm lenses and have different lighting set-ups for each artist - the performance dictates the production."

Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay said: "I'd much rather do TV stuff this way. If you stick me up for one number on a TV show, I'm dire. I've got no time to vibe it, there's no sense of jamming.

"Some of these TV shows are just vibe-less. You listen to it and it doesn't sound anything like we sound. You should either see us live or in this kind of scenario."

Live From Abbey Road will be on More4 from Friday 12 January and repeated on Channel 4 on Mondays.
