Ace bass and a wizard on sax

Drum 'n' bass record producer Tom Jenkinson (aka Squarepusher) finds himself hovering between backroom guru and centre-stage star. Last night he appeared as a solo-bass virtuoso, sporting a matador's pigtail, and was soon killing admirers with scorching, Flamenco-speed licks on his cranked-up six-string bass guitar.
Using what looked like open tuning, he produced surprisingly beefy sounds from a Gallien-Krueger combo-amp and twin-10inch speaker cabinet. His left hand made dozens of original chordshapes that his right articulated in a violent blur of thumb-punching, finger-strumming action. There were pensive moments when a mellow chord hung in the air, but never for long. On came the cascades of jagged ideas, punctuated by angry, staccato sub-bass booms.
Part two of this cutting-edge exercise focused on Evan Parker and his circular-breathing sax wizardry. On his best form, he drew not one full breath for 25 minutes as his quavering soprano subtly created an ever-changing tableau of sounds.
A fast-running stream over pebbles gave way to a rusty mill-wheel, then a celestial choir of flutes and finally a flock of gannets fighting for clifftop space on a stormy night.
When they joined forces, with Parker on tenor, they made surprisingly thoughtful music. Parker wittered happily over the bass-patterns, echoing Squarepusher's more strident phrases with instant accuracy. This superduo will surely ride again.
