AFI are hotting up in the UK

Californian quartet AFI, or A Fire Inside, recently had America's number-one album, and although they haven't generated as much heat over here, you wouldn't know it from the response they received at the first show of a UK tour last night.

The band are known for inspiring terrifying levels of devotion from a fanbase known as the Despair Faction.

Singer Davey Havok, a howling vegan of ambiguous sexuality who seems to be made entirely of tattoos, has received fan mail written in blood.

A recent trip to AFI's web messageboard implied that the only way to demonstrate enough devotion before this concert was to have begun queueing as an embryo.

Their music, essentially tuneful heavy metal with audible lyrics and flicky haircuts, was often drowned out by mass singing from the floor. No one seemed too put- out that their seventh album, Decemberunderground, edges closer to pop than ever before.

New single Love Like Winter draped its huge chorus in shimmering electronic effects. The marching beats and vaulting guitars of Miss Murder sounded unsettlingly jolly for a song about suicide. Havok's occasional switch from a whine to a roar was enough to maintain a healthy edge. He may wear make-up, but he hasn't gone completely soft yet.
