Alice's hammer horror show

There is an abundance of allegedly scary bands at the moment, but Alice Cooper was the first to stage rock in the style of grand guignol. Thirty-five years on, and he's certainly agile, but his show had the creakiness of bad Hammer Horror.

Cooper wheeled out his old guillotine trick, but his "beheading" was embarrassing rather than shocking. He also draped a snake around his neck and even got his daughter to perform a skit about socialite Paris Hilton being savaged by her chihuahua. Bad, but not as bad as the five-minute drum solo.

Admittedly, Cooper's singing was the distinctive rasp of old, but his performance was emotionally empty, and classics such as Billion Dollar Babies sounded soulless.

Surprisingly, Cooper had little to say (perhaps he rations his anecdotes for his show on Virgin Radio Classic Rock), although he did manage to change his outfit several times.

Wearing a vest promoting his current album was just naff. But Cooper's white suit and twirling cane during School's Out helped ensure the fans' favourite was a genuine highlight.

After the Eighties hit Poison, he told the crowd: "Have horrible nightmares."
Not difficult when you've just seen a 57-year-old man in leather trousers.
