Unstable multiple Grammy nominee Amy Winehouse may make a better story about Brits conquering America but other homegrown acts have been managing this gargantuan feat more quietly and wondering what all the fuss was about.

Not that quietly, actually. Bullet For My Valentine share common ground with fellow Welshmen Funeral For A Friend and Lostprophets in selling bone-crunching metal back to the country that produces the genre's biggest bands.

The Bridgend quartet's second album, Scream Aim Fire, currently squats aggressively at number four in the Billboard chart.

Before a crowd of sweaty clone children in black T-shirts, the band displayed the traditional splayed legs and blurred fingers of all metal but also a pretty glossiness that suggested these rock beasts are no strangers to hair straighteners.

Strong melodies occasionally permeated the sheer volume on tracks such as Tears Don't Fall and Hearts Burst Into Fire, frontman Matt Tuck singing with passion and leaving the occasional guttural screaming to bassist Jason James.

But a smattering of fireworks couldn't disguise the fact that there wasn't much to look at on stage, the energy of the music not embodied by the mostly stationary band members. They could do better.
