Bittersweet vocal from Wilco

"You play a solo like that and you get a guitar like that," explained Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy, referring to Nels Cline’s ferocious performance on 12 strings during Impossible Germany, one of their best songs.

The cult Chicago band’s shifting between melodic and avant-garde appears effortless on their new self‑titled album, although on stage their industry was unmistakeable, particularly from Glenn Kotche who attacked his drums for two hours.
Tweedy’s lyrical blending of downbeat and humorous was in evidence on the self-referencing Wilco (The Song), with its endearing chorus "Wilco will love you baby".

Quality tunes: Wilco

Such was the quality of the tunes, which drew inspiration from various classic records while sounding indisputably like Wilco, it hardly mattered that there was not much to see other than six middle-aged blokes playing their instruments. In fact, it was Tweedy’s 42nd birthday and a cake was brought on as a brief respite to the plangent rock.

The encore included the excitably silly Heavy Metal Drummer and Tweedy even encouraged a brief singalong of Queen’s We Are The Champions. With his bittersweet vocal and the band’s brilliant musicianship, perhaps Wilco could yet — even in middle age — cross over from cult appeal to major mainstream success.
