Bowie stars at mud-free Glasto

It didn't rain at all over the weekend, David Bowie said he was having a ball and veteran organiser Michael Eavis declared it the best festival ever. This morning, as a bright sun rose over Glastonbury, thousands of exhausted revellers were setting off for the long trip home after a final night of partying. David Bowie, who had not played at Glastonbury since 1971, made a nostalgic return to the new giant pyramid stage in a fitting finale to a festival blessed with fine and dry weather.
The 53-year-old singer drew massive crowds to hear two hours of classic hits such as Life On Mars and Changes which have marked his thirty-year career. He told the crowd, who jammed into every available space with a view for 500 metres around the stage: "We're having a ball. This is so good. It's great."
Although there were showers on Friday afternoon, not a drop of rain fell for the rest of the weekend. This was a welcome change for festival-goers who have had to endure torrents of rain and fields of mud for the past three years.
Highlights included Moby, Travis, the Chemical Brothers, reggae legend Horace Andy and The Happy Mondays, who looked flummoxed when a naked female ran on stage.
For many visitors, however, the main attraction was basking in the sun watching the extraordinary variety of performers, exhibitionists, showmen and products that Glastonbury always attracts.
Despite more than 1,000 tents being broken into, police said they were happy with the way things had gone, and added that arrests were of "a better quality" than last year.
