Charming Man Morrissey is no moper

In his 50th year the former chief moper in The Smiths is a burly bull of a man, whip-cracking his microphone lead and frequently going shirtless. He made no mention of the illness that postponed a string of May concerts at this overpoweringly loud rescheduled show.

In crowd-pleasing mood, he asked: "Do I look happy? Because I am. Very happy," while offering Smiths classics as three of the first six numbers.

This Charming Man was rendered butch by a crunching riff typical of his weighty current band. The howling guitar of How Soon Is Now? and bright jangle of Ask quickly followed.

Alternating such giants with tracks from patchy recent albums merely underlined the lack of magic present in new songs such as When Last I Spoke To Carol. Always colourful lyrically, fine melodies are now less often in his grasp.

The high drama of Life Is A Pigsty, drawn out long enough for the singer to vanish for a shirt change, was not worthy of its centrepiece status.

However, the strutting rockabilly of The Loop was irresistable, and by the time First Of The Gang To Die galloped on as the encore, the stage invaders finally launched their thwarted salvos towards the royal torso.

With two more nights at Brixton to come he’s as big as he’s ever been and far from sick of such adulation.
