Classy partnership make triumphant return

Just back from the Far East, where they've been stunning the Chinese with their Mahler, the LSO and Daniel Harding created little less of a sensation with the Fifth Symphony on home ground.

This partnership has already developed into a world-class one. I have heard several Mahler Fives over the past few months and this was easily the most stimulating.

The secret of Harding's success is his attention to rhythmic detail. On the micro level, this means taut phrases vigorously sprung and precisely articulated. On the macro level, these phrases build into strong, purposeful lines that stride magisterially through each movement. In more conventional accounts you might admire specific nuances, but Harding sweeps aside all superfluous detail to reveal the bigger picture in a stunningly original light.

It's a remarkable achievement to be able to shape each of the symphony's five movements with such authority - one that would not be possible without the virtuosity of the LSO and, indeed, the unbroken concentration of the players. How they manage to key themselves up to this pitch time after time is a mystery, but the inspiration of Harding was undoubtedly something to do with it on this occasion.

Wolfgang Rihm's impressive In-Schrift made up the programme, but it was the Mahler, exhilarating and life-enhancing, that will stay in the memory.
