Cross the bridge to another world
11 July 2007
Peter Eotvos's As I Crossed a Bridge of Dreams at the Almeida could hardly be more different.
A "dream play" based on the diary of an unknown Japanese noblewoman, Lady Sarashina, from the so-called Golden Age of the 11th century, the work encapsulates the fastidious sensibility of the subject in an audio-visual spectacle of rarefied elegance.
Eotvos's score displays a Webern-like economy, though his tonal palette is subtle and creative. The only live instruments, perhaps implausibly, are an alto and contrabass trombone (Mike Svoboda and Gerard Buquet), but Eotvos also makes imaginative use of a multi-track tape in this chamber version.
Kathryn Harries brought a suitably dignified pose to the lead role (spoken rather than sung), while three "dream speakers" made excellent contributions in similarly heightened modes of delivery. Aided by Adam Wiltshire's simple but evocative designs and Patrick Dickie's sensitive direction, Eotvos transported us for an hour away from trendy Islington to another world so refined that one could hardly bear the spell to be broken.
