Dizzy Gillespie brought back to life

19 May 2009
Dizzy is long gone and his star sidemen, tenorist James Moody and trombonist Slide Hampton, have an incredible combined age of 161 but don’t worry about old boppers struggling to relive former glories. Such fears evaporated within the first number by this remarkably hard‑hitting sextet.
The veterans showed the youngsters a thing or three during crackling versions of Groovin’ High and Con Alma, using the original big band launch-pads, complete with tricky ensemble releases and codas.
Pianist Cyrus Chestnut and trumpeter Greg Gisbert added youthful exuberance to the elders’ massive experience. Chestnut, a showman with the outsize technique and sense of fun to match his ample girth, is the star of the band, with Gisbert not far behind.
Buried for too long in the big bands of Buddy Rich, Woody Hampton and more lately Maria Schneider, Gisbert is an admirable neo-bop soloist with terrific range, flawless technique and ideas to burn. Add slick drummer Vince Eckford and bass-guitarist John Lee, whose acoustic axe sounds closer to a real double-bass than any I’ve heard, and it’s fun all the way.
"Here’s one Dizzy co-wrote with one of our former presidents," quipped Hampton. "It’s called Salt Peanuts." And so forth, pausing only for Moody’s pre-DNA vocal, Bennie’s from Heaven (’Cos he Dam’ sure Ain’t from Me). Ghost bands don’t come more spirited than this.
Until tomorrow (020 7439 0747).
