Eagles fail to soar at O2

With its swanky private boxes, the O2 is the most corporate of venues. Fitting, then, that the Eagles played a five-night residency.

At their finale, these veteran rockers in their dark suits appeared to be dressed for a board meeting. In fact, when vocalist Don Henley switched to percussion, it was like watching your bank manager playing the congas.

The band have sold 120 million albums, including several million of their comeback Long Road Out Of Eden. Such is their run of hits, they could afford to air Hotel California after 20 minutes, with Henley singing and drumming.

The Eagles were technically proficient, although session guitarist Steuart Smith was probably the most adept musician on stage.

Nevertheless, there was something sterile in their weirdly precise renditions. It was only when the slightly crazed Joe Walsh ran around during Life’s Been Good, filming fans with a camera attached to a baseball cap, that you sensed anyone actually still has fun being in the Eagles.

They played for a generous three hours, although Henley also gave a sour little speech insisting that filming on mobiles was "illegal" and that any footage on YouTube would be removed.

Country-rock favourite Take It Easy went down well, as did the various dreary ballads. They are still hugely popular, but the Eagles are really businessmen who just happen to be rock stars.
