Ever-changing band has an energetic live show

The British band Oi Va Voi have been through several different configurations over four years and two albums. But last night they unveiled a line-up that exudes charisma in an energetic live show.
One of the Oi Va Voi constants seems to be the ability to find themselves a sexy fiddler - first of all Sophie Solomon, who has moved on to pursue a solo career, and now Anna Phoebe who performs leggy violin solos in hot pants. Both Phoebe and the striking vocalist Bridgette Amofah are relative newcomers to the band for the current tour but the duo dominated the action centre-stage.
Although she doesn't perform on the new album, Amofah's Anglo-Ghanaian background underlines the fact that less of the material draws on Jewish roots than on the previous album Laughter Through Tears, although revisiting some of songs from that drew rapturous approval from the crowd.
A loyal audience particularly responded to Steve Levi's impressive klezmer-style clarinet and Hebrew vocals. The furious finale was Yuri, an infectious celebration of Soviet kitsch and the hit song of the new album. Trumpeter Lemez Lovas, looking like a mafia boss with hat and shades, wielded his trumpet like a Kalashnikov and compelled you to enjoy it.
