Politics is a tricky business, and not just in Westminster. Three of Britain's brightest player-composers, trumpeter Jay Phelps, altoist Soweto Kinch and pianist Alex Wilson, have just parted from their indie labels to form a coalition of all the talents. Their new chief whip is promoter Peter Conway, who produces the Canary Wharf jazz festival and organised this three-night showcase for them.

Canadian-born trumpeter Phelps, the youngest of this power trio, was last night's leader, with the other two taking supporting roles. Wilson grabs the spotlight tomorrow, with Kinch, the scintillating instrumentalist and rapper recently interviewed at length in this paper, promising a feast of new words, music and dance tonight.

Phelps opened confidently with two standards, St Vitus Dance and Midnight Sun, featuring Andrew McCormack on piano, Matt Home on drums and impressive newcomer Tim Thornton on bass, but sounded less assured when Kinch and Wilson arrived to play his own originals. Admittedly these were challenging pieces with atonal lines that moved in and out of tempo.

All the tension vanished after the interval, when Phelps conducted sparkling arrangements for a youthful 18-piece band containing some brilliant young soloists, notably altoist Lucas Dodd and tenorman Josh Arcoleo. The encores, with vocalists Mike Mwenso and Gwyneth Herbert hamming it up like a bacon factory, completed a lively journey from cutting-edge to utter showbiz.
