Feeling the force, four decades on

The words "jazz" and "café." suggest sedate, sophisticated pleasures. Yet even though this Camden venue holds only a few hundred people, many of them seated at tables on the balcony, the compact size means it's all the better for getting the joint jumping.
The Fatback Band has had more practice than most - drummer Bill Curtis and guitarist Johnny King formed it in 1973. On Saturday night King looked like he'd been plying his trade for at least 200 years, his tiny hunched frame lending him the look of Yoda getting on the good foot. The group's brash brand of party funk hasn't mellowed over the years.
Wicki Wacki and Backstroke were driven by John Flippen's elastic basslines, and hits such as Spanish Hustle and Money were accompanied by trombone and trumpet solos that would have done the JBs proud. And they are masters of working an audience. The thirty- and fortysomething crowd lost its inhibitions when half the band ventured up to the balcony and out into the crowd.
By the time all hands were aloft for their biggest hit, I Found Lovin', the show had the feel of a riotous wedding bash. When so many current bands make playing music for a living look and sound about as much fun as cleaning toilets with a toothbrush, it's wonderful to see a band still consumed with the joy of what they do in their fourth decade in the business.
