Fifty running out of ideas

By most rappers' standards, it would have been a great show. But seasoned 50 Cent fans might be worried that their hero is losing what Austin Powers would call his "mojo". When I saw him perform two years ago, he was basking in the success of a five million-selling album.
This tour, on the other hand, comes on the back of an album that received a critically lukewarm reception and whose sales are barely a third of its predecessor's - a humiliation made all the more painful by Fifty's promise to retire if his album was outsold by Kanye West, made shortly before being, er, outsold by Kanye West.
As he rattled moodily through his thugged-out opening tracks,What Up Gangsta and Guns Come Out, the huge hip-hop beats thudding through O2's soundsystem, I wondered whether his recent woes had contributed to Fifty's decision to deliver a more basic show - no fancy sets, minimal pyrotechnics, and no one for company but Lloyd Banks, who did a cracking job with plenty of crowd-hyping call-and-response chants. Banks also performed his own tracks, Fire and Hands Up, to great effect.
Playing few tracks from his new album and ending, predictably, with his first ever hit, In Da Club, 50 Cent undoubtedly put on a slick show, and his fans were happy. Still, having offered no new ideas, he'll have to pull something special out of the bag next time he comes here.
