Great wits are sure to madness near allied/And thin partitions do their bounds divide,' said the poet Dryden.
While he was probably referring to Les Dennis, he could just as easily have been talking about Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips.
Coyne gives his songs less than orthodox titles such as 'Guy Who Got A Headache And Accidentally Saves The World'.
The Flaming Lips' latest album, the dazzlingly inventive Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, is a concept album of beautiful, psychedelic rock about the sci-fi adventures of a small Japanese girl.
In concert, a whole new dimension of lunacy kicks in. When they last played London, Coyne was smearing himself in fake blood, singing songs with a monkey glove puppet, while the rest of the band were dressed as rabbits and frogs. A Flaming Lips gig tends to stick in the memory.
'I am very normal,' Coyne has argued. 'I mow the lawn, I do the dishes, walk the dogs, I have a wife. Every other aspect of my life is great and normal and stable, and that allows me to be a freak when it comes to music.' And what a brilliant freak he is.
