Gatecrashing Sue Jorge's party

I arrived at the Festival Hall at the same time as a black Mercedes with the number plate BRZ 1. I don’t know whether Seu Jorge, the rasta-haired singer from the working-class breeze-block belt of Rio, knew there were big-shots in the house, but he didn’t show it.

He has the unpretentious style of a street-kid made good — neatly dressed in a jacket and yellow tie. He came on stage alone with his guitar. "Welcome to Brazilian music," he said in English but when he continued in Portuguese, he got the biggest round of applause. Along with the ambassador, it was a Brazilian crowd in the house and, although he did a couple of David Bowie songs in Portuguese from The Life Aquatic, it was his own songs that got the warmest applause.

Then his band came on and Seu Jorge launched into tracks from his forthcoming album America Brasil. Driven by both rock and samba rhythms plus his trademark cavaquinho guitar, the concert soon became a party. The audience was on its feet, dancing and singing out phrases of the songs they knew. Although it was fun to be there, it really felt like somebody else’s party.
