Gigs of the week
19 May 2008
THE METROS
Where: Dingwalls
When: Monday, May 19
Tickets: £8
www.themetros.com
The Metros first came to the attention of 1965's James Endeacott last year, but the music scout who famously signed The Libertines to Rough Trade back in 2002 had to bide his time because some of the band were still studying for their exams. They are being hailed as the next big thing on the indie scene so it's worth seeing what all the fuss is about.
AMY MACDONALD
Where: Shepherds Bush Empire
When: Tuesday, May 20
Tickets: £15
www.amymacdonald.co.uk
Scottish singer Amy Macdonald released her debut album This Is The Life last year. Her folk/rock combination has made her a festival favourite. The 20-year-old will be taking a break from the outdoors for her Shepherd's Bush gig.
MGMT
Where: Astoria
When: Wednesday, May 21
Tickets: £12.50
www.whoismgmt.com
MGMT consists of Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden. Their debut album Oracular Spectacular debuted at number 12 and their single Time To Pretend (a Skins favourite) has received much praise. Expect a lively performance from an unusual band.
SCOUTING FOR GIRLS
Where: Shepherd's Bush Empire
When: Weds, May 21 & Thurs, May 22
Tickets: £14
www.scoutingforgirls.co.uk
The band who claim Elvis isn't dead aren't to be taken too seriously. They don't attempt to be either. The younger crowd adores them and the older audience can count their music as a guilty listening pleasure. Scouting for Girls have a number one album under their belts and are ready to show it off.
PAUL WELLER
Where: Hammersmith Apollo
When: Weds, May 21 & Thurs, May 22
Tickets: £35
www.paulweller.com
Paul Weller, aka the Modfather, is a British music icon; with many of his songs rooted in English culture. Formerly the frontman of The Jam and The Style Council, his solo success has spanned the last two decades. Playing two nights at Hammersmith Apollo this will be a treat for fans.
THE TING TINGS
Where: Astoria
When: Thursday, May 22
Tickets: £12
www.thetingtings.com
With this week's number one single, That's Not My Name, everyone is raving about The Ting Tings. Following a series of let-downs in their music careers, Jules De Martino and Katie White are an advert for the 'if at first you don't succeed' theory.
