You wouldn't award fewer than three stars to an evening of the finest ethnic music in the world, now would you? Certainly not if you were among the crowd who set the rafters ringing at Hackney's brave new arena last night. If some of BBC Radio 3's winners performed slightly below expectations, others were even more devastating in person than on record.

In the former category fell Yat Kha, the Tuvan throat singers who topped the Asia/Pacific section. Albert Kuvezin's vocals came across like the world's loudest and longest burp, but the group's heavy-metal, punk-rock riffs were far less distinctive. So much for central Asian cultural autonomy.

France's Manu Chao couldn't collect his Innovator award, so Hendon's fiesty Susheela Raman, fired by a South Indian heritage and some carefree years in Australia, sang an extra number before taking the best newcomer prize. Improvising in quartertones over a sitar drone, she strutted her leather-trousered stuff like an Asian Tina Turner, or, indeed, a super-slim sumo wrestler.

A more impressive British winner was Nitin Sawhney, (boundary crossing category). His guitar and tablas duo with Arif Kuresh showed technical flair to match Mali's brilliant acoustic-guitarist Djelimadyh Tounkara (Africa group), bassist Cachaito Lopez and his storming Cubans ( Americas/Caribbean) and those incredible gypsies from Romania, Taraf de Haidouks.

The fabulous flute and wordless vocals of North African nomad Magic Malik stole some of Cachaito's thunder, but not even Hollywood heart-throb Johnny Depp, presenting the Europe/Middle East award, could upstage the dazzling Romanians.

"Not only are they the greatest musicians on earth," said Johnny, their biggest fan, "but they also know how to live - really live."

They, plus Senegal's Baaba Maal (best album for Missing You/Palm Pictures) and Afro Celt Sound System (listeners' choice), are all on air tonight, so tune in - and live a little.
