Glowering Reverend sends the girls into ecstasy

Jon McClure, the Reverend whose Makers comprise the rest of this summer's hottest new band, may be best known right now for being thick as thieves with Arctic Monkeys, but there was more than a touch of the Liams about him at his show last night.
Like the Oasis star he swaggered and preened, glowering at his latest fans from beneath a nest of hair, taking a break from being confrontational to share cigarettes as the most obvious rebellious gesture possible.
Still sitting pretty in the top 10 with his debut single after eight weeks on the chart, he has every right to be cocky. The song, Heavyweight Champion of the World, was thrown away early on but set the pace for a short, sharp set of racing bass, funky beats and cutting lyrics about 18-30 holidays and two-timing geezers.
There was frantic ska on Miss Brown and rabble-rousing dance rock on signature tune The State of Things. The crowd was quickly convinced - it is rare to see so many girls perched ecstatically on shoulders at gigs this small.
McClure orchestrated proceedings with blank-eyed coolness, spitting self-penned poetry between songs. Then, at the very close, he leaned into his crowd and saw his shirt ripped open by a fevered groupie. As he sheepishly buttoned up he looked surprisingly shy - that won't happen again any time soon.
