Go West for a screaming night

At the first of five dates at Wembley, Irish teen heart-throbs Westlife proved that they are not as bland as they look. Despite seven consecutive Number One hits in the past 18 months and a Brit award for best pop act, the allsinging, all-dancing quintet have been written off as little more than a well-packaged joke by contemporary pop bands, Boyzone and Steps.
"We couldn't imagine anything more thrilling than performing with a live band and seeing first hand the excitement on our fans' faces," say the Westlife boys - and indeed their fans look excited to the point of delirium. There were chants of "Westlife! Westlife! Westlife!" before the popsters have even appeared on stage. Hordes of dewy-eyed, 11-year-old girls swayed from side to side murmuring: "Oh, my God" as the band bounded onto stage.
With the first strains of chart-topping pop ballad Baby, Open Your Heart, several thousand self-proclaimed "West-life fanatics" started to scream. When baby-faced blond crooner Bryan said: "Everyone put their hands up in the air," the audience took his words as a cue to scream even louder. The boys changed costumes several times as they ploughed through hits including Swear It Again, Season in the Sun and Fooled Again. It's all good wholesome fun. The tunes are catchy if formulaic and the boys are cute, keen and energetic - it's easy to see why they have such a mesmerising effect on pre-pubescent girls. However, it's also the adults in the audience (of both sexes) who screamed so loudly that I could (possibly thankfully) barely hear any of the lyrics.
