Golden voice of Africa

He is descended from kings, is albino and has been dubbed the "golden voice of Africa". And last night Salif Keita, Mali's musical ambassador, gave a roaring show, committed and impassioned.

Taking the stage in a white skull cap and robes, his first action was to drop to his knees and salute, as if in prayer, the audience.

Then, flanked by a seven-strong band, two backing singers and a rather outré male dancer - who pranced on and off the stage and in and out of several cumulatively flamboyant costumes - Keita tried to command the venue with his voice.

While the sound in this lofty venue was harsh to start with, his distinctive, mellifluous, warbling voice cut through and the set bounded along, taking breath only for a short spell of two songs. For these, Keita sat with his acoustic guitar and conjured the audience into silence with some ballads.

Delicate as these songs were, the musicians, venue and audience seemed far more at ease with high volume and energy.

With a fantastic encore of the wonderful Madan, from his acclaimed recent record, Moffou, Keita hit his stride, aided by an effortlessly tight band and particularly by Harouna Samake, an Ngoni player of extreme talent who plucked his African stringed instrument like a Jimi Hendrix guitar hero and helped make the music fly.
