Goldfrapp glitter addictively

At first sight singer Alison Goldfrapp and instrumentalist Will Gregory seem unlikely artistic bedfellows. Where the former Tricky and Orbital collaborator is cutting-edge chic, he is so far from earnest that he wrote the score for the football hooligan flick ID. Check them out as a sonic pairing, however, and the marriage is well made.
Goldfrapp are an intriguing combination all round. Fusing sleek references to John Barry, Ennio Morricone and Roy Budd onto a vocal framework reminiscent of the post-Portishead school of trip hop, this ensemble is very high on musical quality, style and application.
Their sold-out ULU show was a successful amalgamation of mood and mystery, with most of the elements on the debut disc Felt Mountain given an appropriately atmospheric live recreation using harpsichord, electric violins and a light percussive groove.
Unfortunately, Goldfrapp are more of an aesthetic experience than a "let's stand here and gawp" type band. Unless you were within touching distance of Alison's headscarf it was hard to engage with the more subtle pieces.
Still, Human, Utopia and Paper Bag drifted through the chatter like fragmented cabaret, especially when Goldfrapp herself shifted from mic to mic to mix her cool intonations with an effective operatic warble. Handling concert and club dynamics with this grace is a rare skill. When you could hear them, Goldfrapp sounded impressively addictive. Gregory is evidently a major melody manipulator and his partner is cut out to be a star. Track them down soon.
Goldfrapp, Fryars
