Gordon Brown booed at music awards

Gordon Brown's latest attempt to burnish his pop music credentials backfired when he was booed at an awards ceremony.

The Chancellor was heckled as he walked on stage at Alexandra Palace to induct Beatles producer Sir George Martin into the UK Music Hall of Fame.

Ignoring whistles, shouts and boos from some members of the audience, he said: "George Martin is the most amazing man and I'm proud to be able to present him this evening."

"In 1962, even after every major producer rejected The Beatles and one producer said guitar groups had no future, George Martin made The Beatles the most successful group in history."

Sir George, 80, who produced every record made by the Fab Four until they disbanded in 1970, said it was a great honour and added: "I never realised I was as good as all that. I'm not, to be honest, this is hyperbole."

Mr Brown came under fire this year when he claimed he listened to the Arctic Monkeys in the morning. He later admitted he could not name the band's album or any of their singles. At last night's show, Queen drummer Roger Taylor and Razorlight singer Johnny Borrell performed classic Beatles tracks alongside an orchestra conducted by Sir George.

James Brown, Beach Boys star Brian Wilson and Bon Jovi, also performed live to celebrate their entry into the hall of fame along with Rod Stewart and Prince, who Beyoncé Knowles said "would be king by now" if he was British.

However, Joss Stone stole the show with her outfit of white boots, green mini-dress and pink hair and her version of Son Of A Preacher Man sung in tribute to the late Dusty Springfield who was also inducted into the hall of fame.
