Hard lines for melody

A glance at Trivium's most recent album cover might make the casual CD buyer question what year it is. The Crusade, the young Florida band's third LP, features gothic type and a bare-chested warrior wielding an intimidatingly large sword.
Equally, at last night's gig, from the Wagnerian orchestral introduction to the brain-pummelling sounds that followed, there was barely any dilution of the core values of age-old heavy metal.
Frontman Matt Heafy, just 21, had a voice like a Viking with a migraine. Guitarist Corey Beaulieu continually twirled his lank hair in a perfect circle, like a burlesque dancer with a nipple tassle.
On thrash maelstroms such as To The Rats and Ignition, the whole band became an indistinguishable mass of wet hair and blurred fingers. A softer side appeared briefly, when Heafy dedicated Dying In Your Arms "to the ladies" and produced an actual tune.
It was a clue as to how such a violently discordant band can manage to crack the British top 10, and be accused of going soft despite generally sounding like the end of the world.
Then it was back to the ear-bludgeoning. It was exhausting, but judging by the enthusiasm of the masses, Trivium's dated approach is working.
