Ike Turner finds his Mojo at the grand age of 75

Ike Turner was crowned a living "legend" at the annual Mojo music awards.

Turner, 75, who accepted the award at The Brewery in the City from singer Damon Albarn, said: "Everybody thank God. Thank you Mojo for getting me over here. London was my beginning and I hope this is not my end."

Ike had his first hit with his singing partner and wife Tina Turner in 1966 with River Deep Mountain High. She left him in 1976 and became a star.

He spiralled into drug addiction and in 1989 was sentenced to two years in jail for cocaine possession. But his 2001 album Here And Now, his first in 23 years, received critical acclaim. In her autobiography Tina Turner recounted years of violence at Ike's hands. He has admitted hitting her, saying: "Sure, I've slapped Tina ... there have been times when I punched her to the ground without thinking. But I never beat her."

Meanwhile, Amy Winehouse, 23, was nearly two hours late to collect her award for song of the year, Rehab. The London singer was said to be stuck in traffic. She mumbled: "It's a real honour and I'm going to go and get drunk now." She was one of the few young winners.

Iggy Pop and the Stooges received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Ozzy Osbourne was crowned Mojo Icon and Alice Cooper was named Mojo Hero. Slade received the Mojo Vision Award and the award for Outstanding Contribution to Music went to Joy Division.
