Inventive music fits perfectly
03 September 2007
London rapper/singer MIA has been the subject of dozens of newspaper and magazine articles over the past two years, enjoying the extra newsworthiness that comes from being the Sri Lankan-born daughter of a famous Tamil militant.
But it's not her family history that earned Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam several club hits, and the love of the crowd at Fabric on Friday night.
Full of sexy, hip-thrusting charisma, she danced her way on stage clad in a fluorescent purple top to a gritty, ghetto-flavoured backing track which, like much of her work, contained elements of dancehall, hip-hop, rave and Indian music.
MIA's songs are not just vacuous clubbing tunes, though. Behind its rabble-rousing chorus and a spirited guest rap from Nigerian-born MC, Afrikan Boy, Hussel was essentially a thoughtful track on the subject of how rap culture affects listeners in the developing world. There were points at which she sang a little out of tune, but the crowd didn't seem to care, especially during her closing track, Kalang, its heavy, squelchy bass line and hypnotic chorus proving irresistible to the people.
Unique and hugely inventive, MIA's music featured a perfect fit with the open-minded, up-for-it clubbers who make up Fabric's typical clientele.
